Monument to the town foundation of Höhr – Grenzhausen

Coming from the Rhine Valley, you are standing here on the first Westerwald - hill at Höhr-Grenzhausen. The Westerwald is a central mountain landscape in the "Rheinische Schiefergebirge" and lies between the rivers Rhine, Lahn, Dill and Sieg between the towns Bonn - Siegen - Wetzlar - Koblenz. Wonderful leave-  and coniferous forests, graceful brook valleys, the "Wiesensee", "Westerwälder Seenplatte", two dams and the healthy mild-fresh climate lend the rich forest culture landscape natural attractiveness for wellbeing and recreation.

On the 1st April 1936 the three neighbouring pottery communities Höhr, Grenzhausen and Grenzau were united to the pottery town of Höhr-Grenzhausen. To commemorate this union at this view point, a ceramic vase with the pedestal made from the local quartz was established at that time. The town landmark stood here up to the building of the motorway (1960).
As from 2005 the Westerwald - Association is responsible for the preservation of the monument. A new vase replaces the missing smaller vase of 1936. Because of its unusual size it was hand formed using a special technology, thus not turned on the potter's wheel. While beeing fired in the ceramic oven, it was given a genuine salt  glaze.
The ornaments in traditional carving technology shows the coats of arms of Höhr-Grenzhausen as well as the twin cities Laigueglia (I) and Semur-en-Auxois (F). The production took place in the National Technical School for Ceramics Höhr-Grenzhausen. The superstructure was by Bernd Keller, draft and execution by Guenter Schwickert, both subject teacher for ceramics. With 1.30 m height and 1.34 m width it belongs to the world-wide largest freestanding salt glaze stoneware vases.

Down at the pavillon you look on Höhr-Grenzhausen. The ceramic town has approx. 10,500 inhabitants an lies in a wide valley towards the Rhine. Since the 13 th Century numerous enterprises have used the high-quality Westerwaelder clay found here in the "Kannenbaecker-Land" to produce decorating and castomized ceramic products. With its ceramic educational and research developments, Höhr-Grenzhausen itself is the centre of German ceramic development. The Ceramic Museum (next exit starting from the roundabaout three hundred m on the road to Bendorf), informs in various ways about historical ceramics up to trend-modern and technical ceramic in frequently changing exhibitions.

In the forest-rich landscape around Höhr-Grenzhausen, noumerous marked hiking trails lead to beautiful valleys to the Rhine and to the "Koeppel-Huette" with its observation tower (540 m about sea level) in the natural park Nassau. In the romantic quarter, Grenzau, in the Brexbachtal, the castle of Grenzau can be seen and it has the only triangular donjon in Gremany.

From 2005 Höhr-Grenzhausen is part of UNESCO-World Cultural Heritages "Upper German-Raetian Limes". That is the antique 550 km long Roman border from the Rhine to the Danube, which with its long barrier, ditch sections, palisades as well as reconstucted castellan walls and watch towers lead along close to the west of the town. The sites of the longest soil monument in Europe from 85 - 260 A.D. can be reached by the German Limesstrasse and the Limeswanderweg ( Limes Street and Limes Hiking Trail).
